For Oklahoma Bible Academy senior Lucia Groendyke, volleyball has been more than just a sport—it’s been a stage to test her discipline, determination, and her drive to help her team succeed. A three-year starter at outside hitter, Groendyke has become a cornerstone of OBA’s program. Her consistency and leadership haven’t gone unnoticed. Head coach Randy Roth puts it simply: “She is the girl that the other teams will be keying on.”
Groendyke thrives under that kind of spotlight. Her motivation is rooted in team success.
“I love helping my team succeed and get better each and every match,” she says.
That’s what keeps her focused through the long practices and intense games. It’s a lesson she’s learned from her biggest role model, her mom, who taught her to persevere even when life gets tough.
Inside the classroom, Groendyke points to Dr. Lentz, her AP Biology and Chemistry teacher, as one of her greatest influences.
“He’s the best teacher I’ve ever had,” she says. Not only is he patient and creative in helping students understand tough material, but he’s also the kind of mentor who listens and cares about his students beyond academics.
On the court, Groendyke credits her success to discipline and hard work.
“Even when things are hard to do, it’s pushing through those difficult experiences that ultimately make you a better athlete,” she says.
That mindset helped fuel one of her proudest memories: winning regionals her junior year and advancing to state. Rivalries also bring out the best in Groendyke and her teammates. While she doesn’t have a personal favorite opponent, she admits the team loves facing Chisholm, a matchup that’s always circled on the calendar.
In practice, she sharpens her skills against teammate Kami Jenkins, praising her defensive strength. She also admires freshman Sally Davis, calling her “incredibly vocal” and noting her promise as a future leader.
Off the court, Groendyke is active in student council, academic team, and the anatomage team. She balances it all with careful time management, making sure schoolwork is completed before volleyball takes center stage.
To Groendyke, representing OBA means more than competition.
“It means having a Christ-like character, no matter the circumstance.”
Though she doesn’t plan to play volleyball in college, she leaves behind a strong example of leadership and dedication that will carry forward long after her senior season.
