After winning regionals this year, the Oklahoma Bible Academy volleyball team’s first thought wasn’t just about their upcoming competition—it was about cookies. “After winning regionals this year, my team was extremely excited that we were going to state, but the main conversation in our team huddle was whether or not we could make it in time to get Crumbl Cookies before they closed,” says junior outside hitter, Lucia Groendyke. This playful moment captures the essence of Lucia’s team-first mentality and joy for the game.
Lucia’s volleyball career began in sixth grade, and her passion for the sport has only grown since then. “I wouldn’t say there was anything in particular that inspired me to take up volleyball, but I would say being so young and seeing the high school players be so passionate while playing motivated me a lot,” she shares. Now a key player on the team, Lucia reflects on how her role has evolved. “I’m an outside hitter who plays all around, and I work to encourage my team and keep their spirits high, even if we aren’t winning.”
Despite challenges in her journey—like nearly quitting volleyball in middle school—Lucia found strength through her teammates and coach. “I lost my confidence in playing, and it was hard for me to continue to love the sport. After giving it a second chance in high school, I can accredit my team and coach for lifting me up and encouraging me, even when I’ve felt like a burden to the team,” she explains.
Outside the gym, Lucia balances her volleyball commitments with another passion: modeling. In fact, she models for Vogue Taiwan. After graduation, Lucia plans to pursue engineering in college and continue modeling on the side. “I don’t see myself playing volleyball after high school, but I’d love to keep playing as a hobby or maybe even help others with the sport.”
Lucia credits much of her success to faith and family. “My love for the Lord pushed me to keep playing volleyball, and I cannot say I’m more grateful for anything but that.” As she leads her team to the state tournament, Lucia remains proud not only of herself but of her entire squad’s hard work and dedication. “I wasn’t necessarily proud of myself, but more so proud of my team and all the hard work that each and every girl has put in this season.”
