For Sherry Hofen, teaching at Oklahoma Bible Academy (OBA) is more than a profession; it’s a calling that she embraces with passion and faith. After six years at OBA, where she teaches seventh and eighth grade science and coaches middle school girls’ basketball and track, Sherry is deeply rooted in the school’s mission. “I want students to know that their teacher did not only care about their academics or extracurricular endeavors, but she cared for the student as a whole.”
Sherry’s journey into education was largely inspired by her family. Her father, Billy Sacket, was her own sixth and seventh grade science teacher at Fairview Public Schools, and he left a lasting mark on her approach to teaching. “He taught me to never give up on a student, make learning fun and to show that you care.” Her mother, Barbara Sacket, though not a full-time educator, also played a significant role by being a supportive and encouraging substitute teacher. Together, her parents’ influence shaped Sherry’s commitment to not only the academic success of her students but their personal growth as well.
At OBA, Sherry sees her role as more than just teaching science; she aims to impart life lessons grounded in faith. “I enjoy teaching them that their identity should not be found in their performance whether on a test, playing a sport, performing, or any other endeavor. Their identity should be found in Christ,” she said. For Sherry, middle school is a pivotal time of change, and she cherishes the opportunity to help students navigate these years, knowing they will grow into something greater. “The middle school student is not who they will be one day. It is amazing to see how they grow and mature into young adults after they leave middle school, and many seek after Christ.”
Sherry also loves to make learning fun and interactive. From the OBA Middle School Engineering Fair to creating science-themed rap videos and building volcano models, she knows how to engage her students in creative ways. “We also have an Egg Drop Competition with homemade trophies.”
Outside of the classroom, Sherry enjoys photography and spending quality time with her family. She and her husband Scott have been married for nearly 22 years and are proud parents of three boys, Creighton, Wyatt and Silas, who all attended OBA. For Sherry, both in and out of the classroom, it’s all about balancing faith, fun and flexibility. “Things will not go according to plan all the time, so be willing to change your plans, help out and fill in where needed.”
